England captain Michael Vaughan is set to be ruled out of the first Test against West Indies, according to Yorkshire team-mate Deon Kruis.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney has said England will wait as long as possible to give Vaughan the chance to recover after brreaking a finger against Hampshire last week.

However, Kruis yesterday revealed Vaughan had felt some pain in batting practice, and is highly unlikely to play in the opening Test starting at Lord’s on Thursday.

Kruis said: “He has been in the last couple of days trying to test the finger. He’s had an X-ray and had some strapping on the finger but he won’t be ready for the first Test.

“But he feels pretty confident of being ready for the second Test match.

“I suppose he was looking at playing but he was still feeling some discomfort.”

Graveney was revealing the first squad of the international summer today.

Without Vaughan, Yorkshire went back to the top of the Championship table as they thrashed Worcestershire at Headingley yesterday by an innings and 260 runs.

Tim Bresnan took 4-10 from 10 overs and spinner Adil Rashid claimed 4-47 as Worcester were bowled out for 132, after starting the day on 29-1.

Bresnan began their decline with a burst of three wickets in four balls, which saw Phil Jaques, Ben Smith and Graeme Hick dismissed.
