SHOULD BRITISH RULES BE CHANGED FOR OTHER FAITHS?

Monday July 7,2008

Martin Evans

POLICE sniffer dogs could be forced to wear bootees when searching the homes of Muslims to avoid causing offence, it emerged last night.

But a leading British imam says the move is unnecessary and has accused police of failing to carry out proper research into the issue.

Dogs are considered unclean in Islamic culture and many Muslims avoid direct contact with the animals.

In an effort to respect cultural and religious sensitivities, the Association of Chief Police Officers has suggested providing rubber bootees which sniffer dogs could wear on their paws.

It is understood the recommendation also suggests the booties be worn whenever the dogs enter a mosque.
