BEWARE THE HOTSPOTS FOR HOLIDAYS FROM HELL

Monday July 10,2006

THOSE exotic holiday hotspots may fulfil all our dreams – but they can also be our worst nightmares.

Popular destinations like Thailand, Mexico and South Africa, for example, are top of the league for hellish hazards that can hit the unwary traveller.

The three countries pose the greatest perils to tourists when it comes to illness, road accidents and crime.

As thousands of us jet off to sunny climes over the next few weeks, insurance bosses have compiled a list of countries where tourists are in danger – based on claims they have received.

Thailand may be the star of the East but it is also a hotbed for theft, tummy problems, traffic accidents and lost belongings.

Holidaymakers in Mexico fall victim to the heat, with the highest number of claims for over-exposure to the sun.

The perils of the tropics are highlighted by the Caribbean – the No.1 hotspot for insect bites and stings.

South Africa may be a perfect safari destination but it is top of the league for tourists being violently robbed.

Even British favourites such as Spain and the Canary Islands do not escape problems, both posing a risk for robbery, with pickpockets reaping a rich harvest. Safest places to go on holiday are in Western Europe, with Ireland ahead of Belgium, Holland, Germany and France.

Dawn McMullan, of Norwich Union, which carried out the research, said: "Our purpose was not to worry tourists, just to make them aware of what can go wrong.

"Most holidays go without a hitch but we advise everyone to take the same precautions abroad as they do at home.

"It's easy to forget security measures when you're lying in the sun with a cocktail in your hand. Our research shows you need to take a little extra care in certain countries."

Thailand headed the list for lost belongings, road accidents and theft.

South Africa was worst for violent robbery and lost luggage at airports.

The biggest cause of problems abroad, however, is the medical emergency.

Tips for safe travelling: Watch your belongings at all times; do not leave bags unattended and keep valuables in a secure place, possibly a hotel safe.
