But the acknowledgement of the 400,000 Poles now living here will flash across the screen on a Welsh BBC programme.

There are already road signs in Polish to help confused lorry drivers as well as No Fishing notices.

Traditional Polish dishes and ingredients are also available in many high street supermarkets.

The programme, made by the BBC and shown on Welsh-language broadcaster S4C, is a documentary about the history of Polish immigration to Wales and will be aired tomorrow.

Due to the high number of eastern Europeans expected to watch it, programme bosses have decided to provide Polish subtitles so they can understand it.

Digital viewers need only press the red button on their remote control to choose the Polish language version. Emlyn Penny Jones, of S4C, said: “Wales now has a big Polish population and it seemed an obvious step to take in view of the substantial potential audience who would want to follow the Welsh commentary in their own language.”

The documentary, Before Your Eyes: Polish Wales, is presented by Welsh-speaking Barbara Owsian­ka, whose parents fled their native Poland following the Second World War.

It also features Keith Sinclair, a Wrexham police officer who has learnt Polish to communicate with the many immigrants who cannot speak English. He describes it as “a community within a community”.

Series producer Marc Edwards said: “Polish people in Wales helped us enormously in making it and were thrilled we were taking an interest in their community.”
