BROWN DEFENDS NEW TERROR LAW PLANS

Story Image

Gordon Brown has hinted at a 2009 General Election date

Saturday June 2,2007

Prime Minister-in-waiting Gordon Brown pledged he would not put civil liberties at risk with new legislation designed to clamp down on terrorism.

The Chancellor has signalled that he is planning a raft of anti-terror legislation when he takes over at 10 Downing Street later this month, reviving measures to allow police to hold suspects for more than 28 days without charge and allowing questioning to continue after a charge is brought.

His proposals have sparked concern among civil liberty campaigners and some MPs, who warned that extending pre-charge detention to as long as 90 days would amount to "internment".

But Mr Brown used a Labour hustings in Newcastle to reassure them that he will introduce measures to safeguard liberties, including a requirement for judicial review of a detention every seven days.

Mr Brown is also planning to summon cross-party talks in the Privy Council on the use of phone-tap evidence in court - something which was resisted by Prime Minister Tony Blair because security services fear it will expose their secret surveillance methods.

And he wants to make support for terrorism an aggravating factor which judges can take into account when passing sentence, as they currently do with racially aggravated crime.

Mr Brown, who is due to take over as PM on June 27, told the hustings that he was ready to be "tough in the security measures that are necessary to prevent terrorist incidents in this country".

He added: "We will have to consider further legislation to do so. I think that is where the public will need to recognise that we have got a new security problem."

But he said he would make sure that "at no point will our British traditions of supporting and defending civil liberties be put at risk.

"There has got to be independent judicial oversight. There has got to be proper parliamentary accountability.

"We should give the police the power to question people so we can both prevent incidents and get to the bottom of some of these very, very strange dealings."

BROWN'S TERROR LAW PLANS

03.06.07, 7:49pm

We do not want or need any further reductions in civil liberties. About 75% of those arrested under present laws are released without charge and never re-arrested.
Those 75%, if detained for 90 days would probably lose their jobs, have difficulties with Mortgage or rent, and their families would suffer.
Is it possible that we cannot use phone intercept evidence because it is obtained via the US listening post at Menwith Hill.

BROWNS, ELECTION HINTS AND LIES!

02.06.07, 11:27pm

Brown says that: "Labour failed to listen to peoples concerns in the 1980s." Excuse me, but what planet is he on?
New Labour have not listened to people for the last 10 years, it's now 2007. They have ignored public concern about the EU constitution. Reneging on a promise by Blair to have a public referendum. They ignored the massive email petition to No10, regarding road charges. They have ignored the most common concern the public have at the moment, allowing entry to massive EU migrants. They have ignored the public worry regarding the biggest influx of immigrants in this Country's history. And again Blair lied to the Nation on TV, promising to remove large amounts of illegals.
They ignored the public's disagreement with invading Iraq.
I could go on and on!
Amazing, absolutely amazing that this imbecile will be in charge of the Country in a few weeks!
