FLINTOFF FIT BUT JONES IS JINXED

Wednesday May 30,2007

By Colin Bateman

ANDREW FLINTOFF is set to return to action with Lancashire at Hove today, but there is more worrying news about long-term casualty Simon Jones.

The fast bowler who missed virtually all of last season after knee surgery has another date with a specialist after playing one Championship match.

Glamorgan captain David Hemp said: “It’s very frustrating for Simon because his knee keeps swelling up. I feel sorry for him. He is taking 10 days or a week off after a game, as stipulated by the ECB, but to come back after that with the knee still swollen is very disappointing.” Jones played a major part in the Ashes success of 2005 but missed the last Test of the series with an ankle injury and has not played for England since.

Flintoff travelled to Sussex with Lancashire yesterday and the county’s manager Mike Watkinson said he was “hopeful” of him playing a full part in the match due to start this morning.

Flintoff has not played for England this summer since complaining of more ankle problems following a Championship match against Hampshire in early May. He will have to bowl in the four-day game at Hove to be considered by England for next week’s third Test against the West Indies. Matthew Hoggard’s hopes of a return look slim. His groin injury is worse than first suspected and he will not be considered for Yorkshire’s Friends Provident one-dayer against Derbyshire tomorrow.

RAMNARESH SARWAN, in his first series as West Indies captain, has been forced to pull out of the tour because of the shoulder injury he suffered at Headingley. His No2 Daren Ganga will take charge and a replacement batsman, likely to be Ryan Hinds or Wavell Hinds, will be named later this week.
