RACE RIOTS COULD HIT UK, WARNS WATCHDOG

Friday May 26,2006

Race riots sparked by immigrant workers could erupt anywhere in the country, the head of the Government's race watchdog has warned.

Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, said far-right extremists would exploit the arrival of migrants in towns across Britain to try and provoke racist violence.

His comments came as a report warned Oldham is still divided five years after race riots left the town in flames. They said it would take "at least a generation" to heal remaining divisions.

The report's author, Ted Cantle, who led the initial Home Office investigation, said the "mindset of deeply entrenched communities" had prevented greater progress.

Mr Phillips warned that racial tensions could spill over anywhere unless lessons were learned.

"In many cities and some small towns, immigrant communities are changing the landscape, and some people are anxious about this, and the way they respond is sometimes governed by what the far right will do, because they will exploit it.

"So, anywhere in this country it is possible that we might see what happened in Oldham once again."
