More young people are drinking and driving, say police

Tuesday May 29,2007

More young people are drinking and driving, police have revealed.

Scotland Yard said almost a quarter of all offenders and casualties in London were aged between 17 and 24.

An investigation by BBC Radio One's Newsbeat revealed the figures were mirrored across England and Wales.

Scotland Yard's Supt Dave Page told Newsbeat that police were concerned about the trend.

"About a quarter of all arrests are people between 17 and 24, which is obviously very worrying."

Sgt Ivan Stafford, of Leicestershire Police, said: "They're the majority of the casualties, they're the majority of the offenders.

"And the numbers of people being killed in a drink-related accident have increased dramatically.

"And they're killing themselves, they're mutilating themselves, which is such a tragic waste of life."

Sgt Stafford told the BBC that drink-drive figures in England and Wales were at a 10-year high.

'MORE YOUNG PEOPLE DRINK DRIVING'

29.05.07, 4:47pm

There is no such thing as a safe limit with alcohol when you are getting behind the wheel of a car. In my opinion, it should be NO drinking and driving. Too many people think they can handle a car effectively when they have consumed alcohol. I am totally opposed to drinking and driving altogether!

TO RADICAL FOR THE BBC BUT THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE!

29.05.07, 3:39pm

IT IS BECAUSE WE ARE SOFT ON CRIME!

DRIVING A VEHICLE OVER THE LEGAL LIMIT NO QUESTIONS £1000 FINE, 12 MONTH BAN, AND CAR NOT RELEASED TILL FINE PAID IN FULL PLUS STORAGE AT COST.

THE CAR IF LEGAL MAY BE SIGNED OVER TO GO TO AUCTION TO PAY OR CONTRIBUTE TO THE FINE AND IF NOT LEGAL WILL BE INSTANTLY CRUSHED.

NO IF'S NO BUT'S AND IF YOU WANT TO TAKE IT TO COURT THATS OK TOO, BUT BE AWARE YOU WILL PAY ALL COSTS IF YOU LOSE EVERY PENNY FOR THE COURT, PROSECUTION AND DEFENCE.

EASY REALLY!

Just to show how fortunate we are this post was rejected byt the BBC maybe law enforcement is a bit radical for the propaganda channel!

BAN DRINK DRIVERS FOR LIFE!

29.05.07, 2:01pm

The educational standards of our children may be dropping but they DO know that the chances of getting away with driving after a drink are pretty good! I wonder, based on these statistics, how many young drivers actually do get away with it - on more than one occasion. Let’s face it there are simply not enough police on the streets to deal with the problem so a simple solution would be to ban all drink drivers from driving FOR LIFE! Courts should also have an obligation to publish the details of ‘drink drive’ offenders and create a ‘black list’ that can be accessed by the public to keep and eye out for offenders driving after a ban has been imposed. Maybe a lifetime ban will discourage all drivers from taking the risk in the first place, especially if they need transport for their job or even just getting to and from work! It should also cut down congestion a bit as well….
