BECKHAM: Back in the ranks yesterday

Tuesday May 29,2007

By Harry Harris

DAVID BECKHAM will keep a low profile this week, with the FA and the former captain’s camp hatching a plan to keep him out of the spotlight.

Beckham’s advisers have been in talks with the FA and it has been decided the man everyone wants to talk to will decline all interview requests during his 10 days with the England squad.

Beckham has already achieved the improbable with his Real Madrid comeback, the unlikely with his England recall, and now he will attempt the impossible – to become anonymous.

The world’s media will descend on England’s Hertfordshire training camp demanding an audience, but it has already been decided the midfielder, keen to establish himself as a squad player rather than a central figure, will keep his counsel.

All the talking will be done by Beckham’s successor as captain, John Terry, and coach Steve McClaren.

Beckham’s entrance to training yesterday had added suspense as he was the last off the team bus at Arsenal’s training ground.

In a 10-a-side game he showed glimpses of his passing range, and played a part when Alan Smith hit the only goal.

Beckham will play for England for the first time since last summer’s World Cup when they take on Brazil at Wembley on Friday.
