TOSHACK WORRIES OVER DUO

Goalkeeper Danny Coyne is injured

Monday May 28,2007

JOHN TOSHACK has problems ahead of Wales’ crunch Euro 2008 qualifier against the Czech Republic in Cardiff next weekend.

After a 2-2 draw with New Zealand, his main worries are goalkeeper Danny Coyne, injured and released by Burnley, and West Ham defender Danny Gabbidon, whose first full match in four months revealed him to be rusty and uncertain.

Toshack said: “We have a problem with Coyne. This was his first game for club or country since March, while Gabbidon hasn’t played for four months.

“We hope Gabbidon will play against the Czechs. Injury-wise there is no reaction. Usually he is quick and covers the ground well, but he is not there yet. He’s rusty, not really match-fit.

“Coyne had a problem with a swollen knee, although we wanted him to play 90 minutes because of his inactivity. He is keen to play and wants to perform well because of his contractual position. But if not 100 per cent fit, you do more harm than good.

“The Czechs have a physical presence that should concern us. We’re not a big  side and set-pieces are important.

“You only have to look at players like Jan Koller. They are big, physical players and we must try to counter that.”
