WHAT NOT TO WEAR ON THE BEACH

The socks and sandals combo is the ultimate beach-fashion crime

Monday May 28,2007

By Sarah Westcott

MEN hoping to impress the ladies this summer should take note: socks and sandals are out.

So it seems are skimpy Speedo trunks and football shirts, according to a survey.

The poll, commissioned by UKTV Style to promote the return of The Clothes Show, identifies the cringe-worthy fashion mistakes that loads of Brits make as soon as the sun shines and the temperature rises.

Top turnoff for women is a man who sports the dreaded socks-and-sandals look.

Number two in the chart of hideous  offences is the Speedo look, typified by nightclub boss Peter Stringfellow. Third place in the league of manly turn-offs are those football shirts.

Then, at number five, comes the low-life string vest, and at number six is the garishly-colourful Hawaiian shirt.
Seventh worst is the muscle-bulging (or even muscle-minus) tank top and at number eight that sad sight on many a beach, the Union Jack towel.

Grotesque extra-tight running shorts (“budgie smugglers”) creep into the list of shame at number nine. Naff beads and stringy white bands round off the poll at number 10.

And what about the girls, and the fashion mistakes they tend to make? Streaky fake tan comes out as number one.

Next come unflattering crop tops, oversized sunglasses, and the ill-fitting bikini .

*The Clothes Show is on UKTV Style every Sunday at 6pm.
