Bins are being bugged to help promote recycling.

The "chip and bin" is the latest hi-tech measure to try to cut household waste.

Campaigners believe it can help councils identify how rubbish is being thrown away within different regions and even encourage people to recycle.

The new technology uses electronic chips which are carefully hidden under the moulded front lip of wheelie bins, according to Michael Warhurst, of environment group Friends of the Earth.

The chip is read when the bin is collected and lifted on to the refuse truck.

Special collection trucks are fitted with antennas that read the serial number on the chip which matches up to a specific property.

The weight of the rubbish could be recorded and stored.

Mr Warhurst said: "The chip is basically the same as painting a large number on the side of a bin so you can identify who it has come from.

"And overall it is like someone going around and reading the meter, which is what we do for every other utility."

I will never pay anymore for my rubbish to be removed.
I will not, dare not encourage people to dump rubbish on council house doorsteps and bestrew it in our streets but this is what will happen.
We will have the BLACK DEATH, THE PLAGUE returning and rats by the millions because of stealth tax and profits for the cronies of Chairman Bliar this Millipede fellow.
Have you any idea how much money there is in rubbish, millions upon millions and large sums will be given away by our government and councilors to private cronies to sort this rubbish and process it.
This is not about global warming, this earth and solar system has looked after itself for billions of years.
The sly ba------ have found another way to stitch us up big time.
Wheelie bins will be set on fire, bugs and all by the millions as everyone will try to evade, avoid these piratical unnecessary unwanted charges, yobbos will do it for the fun of it.
This Marxist misgovernment has serious misjudged the general public on this one and will regret it.
It will bring down Comrade Broone and Millipede.
Those whom wish to make £millions out of recycling should collect and sort the rubbish themselves without the assistance of a fed up overtaxed lied to nation.
