HOW CAN CAMERON SOLVE THE EDUCATION CRISIS?

Story Image

David Cameron

Sunday May 20,2007

TORY education plans are doomed to fail the next generation of children because they are embracing Blair’s failed education policies, education experts fear.

Leading academics warn that embracing City Academies as the foundation of its schools policy is a mistake.

They point to alarming statistics revealing that only 22 per cent of pupils attending Labour’s flagship academies passed the benchmark five A*-C grades at GCSE last year. Even the much-derided secondary modern schools, of which there are still 178 in England, managed a pass rate of 32 per cent.

Children who did not pass the 11-plus exam were sent to secondary moderns, although most of these were abolished in the comprehensive revolution in 1974. They were regarded as providing a second-class education.

But with City Academies becoming the key plank in David Cameron’s education revolution, critics warn that his party is about to saddle itself with a white elephant in a desperate attempt to appeal to voters from all classes.

What do YOU think? Should Cameron abandon this vote-winning attempt and come up with a sensible policy? What do you think would solve the crisis?

HOW CAN CAMERON SOLVE THE EDUCATION CRISIS

08.08.07, 11:12am

I can't understand Cameron who's been educated at Eton.If its anything like Dulwich College, and I am given to understand that it is from those who have attended both...why doesn't he apply the same "savage" standards he suffered.
One lad from Dulwich College got twelve 0s and4 Astars but got roundly castigated because the grades weren't all As!
Of course all schools where parents pay for education have the co-operation of those parents ...which helps.!!

The public schools seem very, very harsh on pupils in comparison with state schools, although the public schools also have many more extra- curricular activities than state schools, engaging minds more effectively.

No trouble with girls in the family in publix schools but the boys were terrible..but once over that freaky time.... and I mean freaky they settled down.

I understand that Gordon Brown and his cohorts have made life so difficult that both parents have to work in a lot of cases I guess they're too dead beat when they get home to cook anything but brain damaging food and drop down on the sofa

EDUCATION CRISIS

21.05.07, 1:17am

I am not a teacher, just a simple minded person, but it seems to me the plan is always simple, a better defined education and less useless information, there is an overwhelming amount of information available these days especially with computers but most of it is just useless filler just like was used in some of the pyramids in Egypt yet they still had a structure pattern built in to them which played a key part and purpose in their makeup. Many young people just don’t know how to compile or put everything together correctly which is why they are all so disorderly and we are supposed to have teachers to apply what is right, but if they don’t know anything about structure either then it’s a lost cause into chaos. One can tell today that people don’t have the speed or accuracy of a computer or its capability to create STRUCTURE at such a high rate; however it’s this process which is actually lacking in most children and in most adults. This is because of poor basic standards of patterns and order in reading, writing and arithmetic and discipline which bonds everything together as in a structure, in the same way that religion does in spiritual matters. Children like many adults these days are to free with their thoughts, mouth and actions thinking they know it all even before they leave school, which never was the case when I started work and I only went to a secondary modern school. I am no Einstein but even I know that any well balanced human being has to be trained in the 7 primes based on the Alphabet if they are to be of any use in society... on any level, and these initial primes are Attitude, Behaviour, Conduct, Dignity, Honour and Pride which all add up to (self) RESPECT and the respect of others. When these are compiled together using calculus (maths) involving the entire alphabet then one creates the perfect order and pattern in the mind in thoughts, words and deeds on which to build a balanced and highly educated and decent person. Just how many of these primes are present in our young children today, very little that I can see off, they all speak, look and behave like gobo’s, hobo’s and yobo’s, as do many adults so what chance is there for a better society in the future unless there is a return to the 7 primes and what it really means to be English living in ENGLAND. Ask any teacher, politician or governmental leader what the 7 primes are in life and you will be lucky if any one of them gets it right and I doubt if any church leader knows either, if they do they never speak of it. A return to religion and genesis teachings is needed.

IT'S PROBABLY TOO LATE, MAYBE FOR ANYONE TO SOLVE!

20.05.07, 9:45pm

All talk and no action – which is typical of all parties for the plain and simple reason that they are not willing to work together on even something as simple as Education. Out children are getting ‘dumber’ as standards drop year on year! My son has just started taking his GCSE exams and I will not say what I think about what he HAS been studying or to what level …. He is predicted, by his teachers, to get A’s and A*’s in most subjects (12 of them) but suffice to say that there is not a hope in hell that he could sit an ‘O’ Level from 1970 and actually pass and THAT, to me at least, is a very frightening thought! Even worst is the fact that we are seeing a nation of seriously under educated ‘young’ adults (potentially many/most who left school after lets say 1990) who honestly believe that they have a high level of education……. And these are the future of our nation! Is it any wonder that the country is ‘going downhill’ so fast? To try and rectify this situation is going to be an almost impossible task, who is going to set the standards? To set the standards, in my opinion, to a half way decent level you are going to have to go back to at least 1975 when exams, both ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels, actually meant something, when a Degree meant you achieved a pass mark of at least 75% and NOT 30% that will get you one now, when academic qualifications actually meant something! To be honest it is probably to late to do anything now as the ‘rot’ has set in too deeply and those people who set the criteria for GCSE’s, A Levels and Degrees simply do not have a high enough standard themselves and, worst of all, will not be willing to admit their own failings for fear of being seen as dumb as the rest of us! This is not something that can be blamed on Labour but they have certainly perpetuated, and maybe accelerated, the decline!

D I S C I P L I N E !

20.05.07, 8:50pm

No discipline in our schools equals no proper education for millions, is it the wealth of students at private schools that achieves results or the discipline, the fact that the parents actually give a damn and support the staff in disciplining their children!

You can have as many different type of schools as you like but without discipline and respect then the pupils will continue to choose to learn and the teachers cannot choose to educate!

Its not rocket science a thug does not want to go to school so we exclude him instead of sending him to an approved school, where the discipline needed is approved!

DISCIPLINE not silly stunts like lodging with a Teacher or moving in with Asian families will make a difference, discipline for children, teachers, officials, ministers they all do whatever is easiest instead of what is best!

To resign would be the best thing, a once conservative party has completely lost its way.I think Cameron would feel more at home on the liberal bench take with you Willett,Maude, and advisors Hesletine,Major and Letwin.
