ASK THE EXPERTS - KIA CARS

Parkers answers your questions on Kia models

Q I WANT to buy a people carrier to fit my growing family. My friend has suggested the Kia Sedona. What do you think?

A IF you are looking for value, flexibility and interior space above status and image, then the Sedona should be high on your shopping list. Prices start at £3,500 for a 1999/T. It's a better class of vehicle for about the same price as a Renault Scenic, with room for a family of seven plus their luggage. Although the build quality on early models is only mediocre, this would be a great buy if you are on a budget and need a large MPV to cater for your family's needs.

Q I've moved to the city and was interested in changing my year-old Kia Sorento V6 XS for a Ford Focus, but was horrified to be offered just £13,000 for it. The list price is nearly £23,000.

A A car suffers the worst depreciation in its first year.
Also it sounds as if you've taken it to a Ford dealer who won't sell the car on the forecourt but will shift it on, probably at auction. You should get offered more by a Kia dealer but to get the best price, sell it privately.
Unfortunately, if you buy a brand new car then sell it a year later you'll lose money.

Q I AM looking to buy a small car to tow on a trailer behind my motorhome. I am considering the Peugeot 107, Fiat Panda and Kia Picanto. What do you suggest?

A THE Peugeot 107 is an excellent runabout, has a top speed of 100mph and is nippy around town. It is well equipped and high quality, though it is a little more expensive than similar models. The Fiat Panda is fun to drive, cheap to buy, inexpensive to run and is light enough to be a sound option for towing. Finally, the Kia Picanto retains its value extremely well, is fantastic value and is economical on the fuel. If you are looking for a fun and cheap drive, the Picanto is the best overall package.

Q I own an older Kia Magentis. Is the new one much better?

A Yes, the new Magentis is a far more competent car than the model it replaces and has a diesel engine for the first time. It's also more comfortable, better equipped and roomier than before. Although the all-black interior is sombre and the hard interior plastics look cheap, the Magentis competes with its rivals on price - starting at £14,495 - and the ride is smooth and composed.
However, if you're still unsure, a nearly-new Vauxhall Vectra or Ford Mondeo may be a cost-effective alternative.
