ASK THE EXPERTS - 4X4S

Thursday March 8,2007

Parkers answers your questions on 4x4s

Q I need a big, but cheap, 4x4. What's the SsangYong Rexton like?

A SsangYong's Rexton (below) falls between the compact and large 4x4 categories, offering a little more space - up to seven seats on some models - for the price of a Toyota RAV4 or Nissan X-Trail. It might appeal to customers looking for a bargain, or those new to the 4x4 market, but those who have driven a modern European or Japanese 4x4 will probably be unimpressed. Try the Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe; they're less pretentious and would be far more worthwhile for those looking for a bargain off-roader.

Q I AM currently looking to change my ageing seven-seat Ford Galaxy 2-litre Ghia and would be interested in purchasing a small 4x4 to cope with both the school run and country living. However, I only have a maximum budget of £7,000. Any suggestions?

A ALTHOUGH the Suzuki Jimny 1. 3 JLX may be compact and only powered by a moderately small engine, this 4x4 is ideally suited to handle the tricky combination of urban and rural living. The Jimny is also reasonably economical and reliable, and although it's not the fastest 4x4 on the market, it can handle proper off-road conditions when it's asked to. A little bit of research can result in some great bargains and this particular model can be found at just under £7,000 if you do your homework.

Q Do you know what I could get for my 05/54 Land Rover Freelander Station Wagon 2. 0 Td4 SE?

A Its value has dropped recently due to the forthcoming launch of the new Freelander, but there's still a strong demand for it and you shouldn't have too many problems selling. The price tag depends on what condition it's in and who you're dealing with. If you're selling to a private dealership, expect it to fetch just over £15,000, whereas you'll only get £13,000 if you part exchange. It's worth around £14,500 for a private sale, but any signs of off-road damage will undermine its value by up to £3,000.
