GULLIT: Warned Blues

Wednesday May 16,2007

By Matt Law

RUUD GULLIT thinks Chelsea only have the consolation prize left in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Having lost out to Manchester United in the League and been beaten by Liverpool in the Champions League, the Blues can now only add the Cup to their Carling Cup success.

Gullit was proud to lift the FA Cup in his time as Chelsea boss in 1997, but expectations have changed.

“Chelsea will be disappointed not winning the major things like the Premiership and the Champions League,” he said.

“Of course they want to win the FA Cup, but it is just a consolation. It can’t be any more because they wanted the Champions League.

“They have won the FA Cup a couple of times, so it doesn’t mean the same thing any more. That doesn’t mean it’s not important. It’s vital. Jose Mourinho doesn’t want to be subject to total supremacy by United.

“Expectations now are different because Chelsea have won so many things. They have become spoiled.”

Gullit, meanwhile, has warned new Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce he faces a battle to attract players.

Allardyce has a big transfer fund, but Gullit knows from experience that money is not always easy to spend.

He spent an ill-fated year in charge at St James’ Park and struggled to convince the top stars to join.

“The problem is that most players first go to Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and United,” said Gullit.
