FOOTBALL HONOURS LEGEND MOORE

Story Image

The statue at Wembley

Saturday May 12,2007

By Nigel Clarke

Bobby Moore was yesterday back at the place he left his heart. A statue of the World Cup-winning captain was unveiled outside the new Wembley Stadium as an everlasting symbol of England’s greatest day.

And now Moore, who died 14 years ago, is soon to be joined by Sir Alf Ramsey, his manager that day in 1966 when West Germany were beaten 4-2.

I understand plans are already under way for the Football Association to commission a bronze bust of Ramsey similar to the one of their former boss Herbert Chapman, once so proudly displayed in Highbury’s marble halls and now at the Emirates.

Ramsey has never been honoured by football in the 41 years since leading England to their triumph. He did not even receive a winner’s medal.

When the new Wembley was commissioned, they named a bridge after the White Horse that figured so prominently in the 1923 Cup final between West Ham and Bolton – but Ramsey was overlooked.

Now a place will be found for him close by to the work of art that was officially opened by Sir Bobby Charlton, in which Prime Minister Tony Blair paid tribute to one of England’s greatest players.

The simple tribute on the base of the Moore statue reads: “Immaculate footballer, imperious defender, immortal hero of ’66. First Englishman to raise the World Cup aloft. Favourite son of London’s East End, finest legend of West Ham United. National treasure, master of Wembley, lover of the game, captain extraordinary, gentleman of all time.”

Members of the England and West Germany teams were at the ceremony, along with Moore’s former Hammers team-mates.
