SGP FINAL: GERMAN GRAND PRIX

Story Image

Saturday October 11,2008

THE FINAL round of the 2008 FIM Speedway World Championship comes from the magnificent Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen in Germany tonight.

And the World Championship race goes down to the wire for the first time since 2004.

Jason Crump took a 17-point lead over Tony Rickardsson into the decider four years ago and managed to defend it for his first World title - but this season, he is doing the chasing with a 16-point gap to make up on Nicki Pedersen.

Pedersen reports a good week of progress in his recovery from a heavy crash in Poland last weekend.

The 16-point margin gives the Dane plenty of breathing space, but he will be keen to wrap up the title as quickly as possible and also make his bid for the Super Prix prize.

"Today I was able to jog for half an hour. It still hurts quite a lot, but the positive thing is that I'm able to run. It tells me that my body is getting much better.

"Right now I am taking it day by day, but there's absolutely no doubt that I will race on Saturday. I am very much looking forward to it."

Crump comes into the meeting in fine form, and he wrapped up the prestigious Elite League riders Championship at Birmingham in the week.

Meanwhile Britain’s Scott Nicholls will be hoping for a good meeting in order to secure a top 8 finish and a guaranteed place in next seasons SGP series. Nicholls has collected 18 points from the last two rounds.

"The latter stages of the series have been much, much better for me. I can take the positives,” he said.

"I'm only three points out of contention, so I'm going to Gelsenkirchen in a positive frame of mind to claw that back and earn my right in the Grands Prix for next season."

One place remains in the first-ever Super Prix – dubbed the Richest Minute in Motorsport, is sure to provide a spectacular conclusion to the GP series.

The winner of the race will take the top prize of $120,000, with $40,000 going to the rider finishing second, $25,000 for third place and $15,000 for fourth.
