ROVER RETURNS: The QE2

Monday October 6,2008

By Derek Watson

IT IS 40 years since the QE2 first sailed down the Clyde after being launched by her namesake at the John Brown’s shipyard.

But yesterday, after sailing over 2.5million miles around the world and crossing the Atlantic some 800 times, she came home for one final nostalgic visit, escorted by Royal Navy Type 42 frigate HMS Manchester.

Thousands turned out to see her in Greenock yesterday.

The 70,000-tonne ship is on her farewell tour before retiring to the United Arab Emirates in November to become a floating hotel.

The QE2 has carried 2.5 million passengers, including royalty, heads of state and celebrities and boasts five restaurants, three swimming pools, a nightclub and bars, cinema, casino and even a branch of Harrods.

But she also famously saw service as a troop ship in the Falklands War.

Michael Gallagher, Cunard

Cunard spokesman Michael Gallagher said: “She served her country in her time of need and she has served Cunard with great distinction.

“Her last visit to the Clyde brought a lump to the throat. I am sure all on board are delighted at having a Royal Navy escort.”
