HUGHES ON A HIGH IN AUTUMN OF HIS CAREER

Richard Hughes: On a high

Thursday October 2,2008

By Rolf Johnson

Richard Hughes has ridden the storms of a roller-coaster season and wouldn’t swap his book of mounts this weekend with anyone.

Bearing in mind he has been jocked-off Youmzain in the Arc, on which he was second last year, and his best mount, Paco Boy, will be ridden by Christophe Soumillon in Saturday’s Prix Foret, Hughes must fancy his alternatives.

If Look Here is supplemented for the Arc,  Hughes will be on board the Oaks winner. “I know just how good she is,” he said. “I chased her home at Epsom on Moonstone.”

Typically, Hughes, second only to Ryan Moore in the jockeys’ championship, bears no resentment over Youmzain. “The more rain the better for him,” he said. “Heavy ground would be ideal.”

On Saturday he partners the favourite for the totesport  Cambridgeshire, Swop, and the brilliant Darjina for the Aga Khan in the Sun Chariot.

Hughes and Paco Boy finished on Darjina's tail when they were placed behind Goldikova in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp last month.

At Newmarket tomorrow he is optimistic about a Middle Park-Cheveley Park double on Infamous Angel and Prolific for father-in-law Richard Hannon.

“We need the rain to stay away,” said Hughes. “If it does they are as good as we have.”

Praise indeed considering Hannon has sent out 80 juvenile winners this season. Hughes’ handle on the form is unsurpassed.

Bushranger will be favourite for the Middle Park even though his form with Gallagher in France makes Prolific the Irish colt's equal.

Having banked near six-figures last weekend from wins on Penny’s Gift and Soul City, Hughes could land another huge pay cheque today at Newmarket with Appraisal in the Tattersalls October Sales Stakes.
