HOLLYWOOD, MON AMOUR: 80S MOVIE SONGS REINVENTED BY MARC COLLIN (PIAS) ***

Story Image

Monday September 29,2008

By Emily Garnham

AS A CHILD of the Eighties, I was admittedly reluctant to listen to some of my favourite cheese-night tunes ‘reworked’ by Nouvelle Vague’s Marc Collin.

But he strips away the lusciously dated bombast and redresses your entire Aerobic Workout iPod playlist (go on, admit it – we all have one) in Parisian chic.

You’ll still be able to recognise the movie theme tunes – thanks in large part to the lyrics as Collins has experimented subtly with rhythm and syntax in a bid to disguise the likes of Footloose and When Doves Cry.

The usually unashamedly garish Flashdance (What A Feeling) is given a ruthless facelift by a first-rate surgeon – sorry, musician - opening with a brief, melancholy piano intro before the vocals kick in.

Listen out for Hollywood actress Juliette Lewis who performs This Is Not America.
