RAVEN FLYING FOR THE CUP

TOP DOLLAR: Curlin took his earnings to over $10m at Belmont

Monday September 29,2008

By Rolf Johnson

TEAM TACTICS triumphed in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

Trainer John Gosden, jockey Jimmy Fortune, ‘horse whisperer’ Yarmy Dyble who saw one-time tricky customer Raven’s Pass safely into the stalls, and all the Clarehaven stable staff played their part ensuring the colt’s glory day.

And, the squad had a double celebration when Rainbow View proved she is the best juvenile filly in the Meon Valley Stud Stakes. Raven’s Pass looked magnificent and will give a great account of himself for his chosen race at the Breeders’ Cup – the Mile (for which he is favourite) or the Classic – in California in November.

“We don’t have to decide for 10 days,” said Gosden.

In the States on Saturday, Curlin swept to a record $10million lifetime earnings at Belmont Park, New York. Trainer Steve Asmussen is still unsure whether to run Curlin on the synthetic surface at Santa Anita.

The Belmont track was  dirt and not all American horseplayers, including connections of Curlin, are synthetic converts.

Jeremy Noseda’s Sixties Icon did his Breeders’ Cup chances – he bids for the Marathon – no harm when giving ground and weight away in yesterday’s Cumberland Lodge Stakes.

Raven’s Pass was, however, the hero of the weekend. For the first time in four encounters he got first run on dual Guineas winner Henrythenavigator and Gosden’s dilemma of which race to aim at is a nice one.

I doubt he will spend much time deciding that Rainbow View’s fragile nerves – she was dripping with sweat before confirming her Guineas’ favouritism – ought not to be tested at the Breeders’ Cup.
