AND WHEN IN INDIA, DON'T MISS. . . UDAIPUR

Story Image

The City Palace, Udaipur , Rajasthan, India

Tuesday March 6,2007

KNOWN as the Venice of India, with its marble palaces and lakes surrounded by spectacular rolling hills, Udaipur oozes romance.

Its jaw-dropping sunsets and rich cultural heritage make it the most sought-after honeymoon destination in Rajasthan and a top contender for Liz Hurley's wedding to Indian entrepreneur Arun Nayer. Don't miss:

1) Tour of the City Palace Stretching along the eastern shore of Pichola Lake, the breathtaking City Palace couldn't be a more colourful example of old India at its best. From the intricate hand-painted murals, comprising vegetable dyes that have stood the test of time, to Victorian tiles imported during the days of the Raj, the City Palace provides a technicolour insight into the Mewar dynasty, thought to be the oldest surviving bloodline in the world.

2) Sunset cruise Pichola Lake is best enjoyed at dusk when the argy-bargy of city life is soon forgotten as you sit back and soak up what is arguably one of India's finest sights.

3) Lake Palace hotel The first and only stop on Pichola Lake has to be the Lake Palace, now a luxury hotel. A popular location for film shoots, including James Bond's Octopussy, it is the perfect place to refuel with a gin and Indian tonic.

4) The Udaipur railway This was where Richard Attenborough filmed the iconic scene where Gandhi is thrown off a train, inspiring his campaign for equal rights. It actually happened in South Africa, but it was filmed in Udaipur.

5) Shopping in Shilpgram The scenic journey alone is worth the trip to this shopping village with its plethora of arts and crafts and traditional entertainment.
