VETTEL GRABS SHOCK POLE AS STORM RUINS HAMILTON RUN

Lewis Hamilton: 15th on the Grid

Sunday September 14,2008

By Bob McKenzie

Lewis Hamilton’s week went from bad to worse as the rain wrecked his qualifying session to leave him down in 15th for today’s Italian Grand Prix.

The lottery session threw up the biggest shock in years as Sebastian Vettel’s Toro Rosso ended up on pole, much to the delight of his astonished team.

Hamilton, still reeling from last weekend’s retrospective 25-second drive-through penalty which led to him being stripped of victory at the Belgian Grand Prix, effectively blew it at the start of the second session in Monza as he delayed his exit from his pits garage.

Just minutes into the 15-minute period the rain lashed down and the Brit was the last of the 15 to take to the track.

The other 14 at that stage had all managed to effectively put in a banker lap, and it was those times which carried them through as the track grew progressively slower with the rain becoming heavier.

Hamilton’s main title rival Felipe Massa could only manage sixth in his Ferrari – but crucially he still has a realistic chance of victory this afternoon.

Massa’s team-mate Kimi Raikkonen is directly in front of Hamilton in 14th – and Ferrari could use some heavy-handed tactics to scupper Hamilton’s attempts to race through the field in the opening laps.

Massa just managed to scrape through into the top 10 in Q2, and that proved crucial for the Brazilian because the rain then eased for the final Q3 showdown.

Behind Vettel, giving his team their first pole, came Heikki Kovalainen in his McLaren, followed by Red Bull’s Mark Webber and the second Toro Rosso of Sebastien Bourdais.

Nico Rosberg will start fifth in his Williams, followed by Massa, the Toyota of Jarno Trulli, Renault’s Fernando Alonso, Timo Glock in his Toyota and the BMW Sauber of Nick Heidfeld.

BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica was also eliminated in Q2 and he will start 11th.

For the first time this year, a Force India car made it into Q2 – Giancarlo Fisichella starts 12th ahead of David Coulthard’s Red Bull.

Honda’s Jenson Button will start down in 19th, describing the car as the worst he has ever driven in the rain.
