CONTENDER: Di Canio wants the job

Thursday September 4,2008

By Gareth Bebb for express.co.uk

FORMER Upton Park striker Paulo Di Canio has thrown his name into the hat to become the next West Ham manager.

West Ham legend Di Canio has contacted the club to offer his services after Alan Curbishley resigned on Wednesday.

Reports suggest the enigmatic Italian could form a dream managerial partnership with ex-Cagliari coach Davide Ballardini.

Di Canio is due in London today as part of the Rest of the World side playing in the Soccer Aid 2008 charity game against an England side this Sunday.

Sources close to the ex-West Ham man said last night: "He is already pushing himself for the job and is very interested in speaking with West Ham.”

Di Canio, who was signed for the Hammers by Portsmouth coach Harry Redknapp, joined the club in 1999 and made 118 appearances for the club.
