ANDY Murray has reached his first ever Grand Slam semi-final after defeating Juan Martine del Potro in the US Open.

The 21-year-old won the match in four sets to set up a semi-final with his Wimbledon nemesis and top seed Rafael Nadal.

Murray has already set his sights on beating the World number. He said: "I understand getting to the semis is a great achievement but I want to go a little bit further."

The Scot progressed 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 7-5 after a tense tussle with the giant Argentine.

Murray began brightly and took a 4-1 lead, only to see Del Potro fight back to win the next four games and serve for the opening set.

Murray stepped up a gear and produced a sensational backhand to break Del Potro again and take the set to a tie-break, which he took 7-2.

The second set went with serve until Murray broke at 5-5 to serve for the set, only to then throw away the opportunity when Del Potro broke to love.

It was an uncharacteristic lapse from the Scot but he raised his game again to take the second set tie-break and grab a commanding hold on the match.

Murray seemed to be heading for the semis but Del Potro fought back, breaking Murray twice to snatch the third set.

Murray dropped his serve again early in the fourth set to spark fears that he may be about to capitulate, but he exhibited his new found steely determination to fight his way back.

Del Potro finally cracked, handing the Scot a match point before sending a backhand long and confirming Murray’s passage into the next round.
