HAS LABOUR WRECKED THE HOUSING MARKET?

Has Labour wrecked the housing market?

Wednesday September 3,2008

GORDON Brown’s attempt to revive the housing market fizzled out last night when his stamp duty holiday was dismissed as “a drop in the ocean”.

The Treasury declared a 12-month freeze on the hated property purchase tax – but only for people buying homes valued at £175,000 or less.

Experts said the move will make no difference in nine out of 10 transactions.

And the action unravelled further as Chancellor Alistair Darling admitted that no money had yet been found to pay for a £1billion package of emergency measures to combat the property market squeeze.

Critics immediately branded the move “a political sticking plaster” and an “utter waste of time”.

After months of dithering over stamp duty, the Treasury announced that the threshold for paying the one per cent starting rate will be raised from £125,000 to £175,000 for 12 months from today.

It will save some home-buyers a maximum of £1,750 and cost the Treasury an estimated £600million.

But even the average home – valued at £178,364, according to the Land Registry – would not be affected.

* Do YOU think Labour has wrecked the housing market?

HAS LABOUR WRECKED THE HOUSING MARKET ?

19.09.08, 2:07pm

Stamp duty, information pack.
Excuse me, but I am curious as to the floodings of peoples homes, when everything related apears to be so well scrutinized, documented, structured, etc. N.H.B.... ENV; Dept, ........along with all sorts of regulations. Houses still freezing cold, prone to flooding,............ noisy,..... "expensive".... Surveyors, architects,
builders, planners, insurance, banks.
Please improve run of the mill housing quality, even allowing me to live as I please, perhaps even build my own log cabin ! Sandinavian, Canadian, style, a tepee maybe, a caravan, boat, even a park bench with a Polar sleeping bag, better than neighbours from hell that no one on earth has the answer as to how to eradicate or controll. there have been several leaders in the past that would have put things right..... Oh yes your power socket must be ...inches..ooppps centimetres above the...... skirting board ! These 'things ' make life so much more bearable !

THE GOVERNMENT

09.09.08, 10:58am

has wrecked everything it has touched.

The Midas touch in reverse. Gordon virtually gives away our gold instead of creating it!!

House prices MUST drop soon anyway, there is no way that working cl**** people can afford the astronomical prices being asked for average properties.

And as for the BLiars, I can't understand where they have gathered that sort of money on a PM's salary - and even a Judges salary.

They should be investigated by the police, something stinks there.

If it was someone claiming housing benefit who wasn't entitled to it, there would be an outcry - these those two false-smiling sponging gits rub everyones nose in the fact they are now property magnets - and no one appears to give a monkeys.

Get the fraud squad round there pronto!

The housing market..... its been a great little
earner.

These people do nothing. Financial freedom has
led to the sinecure people running the world.

You can't control it. its too big.

Not controlling ridiculous lending fractions ?

Blame Blair.. it was his watch.

WHAT HOUSING CRISIS!

07.09.08, 8:27am

I can't understand why everyone is talking about a housing crisis. Mr and Mrs Blair have demonstrated their complete confidence in a flourishing housing market. Apart from owning two London homes and 2 flats in Bristol they have just recently purchased a stately home in Buckinghamshire for 5.75 million pounds. Oh, I nearly forgot, they also own a home in Durham.

2010?

Even by a stretch of the imagination is only 15 months away. I will grant you your plural, but only just.

My plans will take me away from these shores, but not just yet. There is still money to be made and tasks to be completed. I couldn't cut and run on my conscience, so the dreams are on hold for now.

NO POSTS HERE FOR 11 HOURS!! I'M NOT SURPRISED!! YOU HAD TO SELL YOUR COMPUTER TO PAY THE ENERGY BILLS!

Now it is reliably forecast that it will be years and years and years before the UK housing market recovers.

In the meantime, why don't you all emigrate to a proper country that treats its citizens as adults not recalcitrant children?
