Hunter Mahan claimed players would seriously consider boycotting the event in future because it had become a money-making exercise for the US PGA and no fun for those involved.

However his apology to Azinger at the US PGA Championship – and a chronic shortage of in-form candidates – means Mahan was named alongside world No8 Steve Stricker, big-hitting local JB Holmes and Chad Campbell.

“I’ve talked to captain Azinger and he knew my true feelings at heart and how much I wanted to make the team, so I didn’t feel like I knocked myself out of it, but I am definitely very grateful for this opportunity,” said Mahan. 

The fallout from Nick Faldo’s wild-card picks, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey, continued yesterday with the omitted Darren Clarke claiming the Europe captain had moved the goalposts for selection.

“Nick had stated he wanted his players to be on form, he wasn’t going to pay particular attention to the rankings. I thought I was on good form, my record this year has been a couple of good wins and lots of top tens, but unfortunately he changed his mind,” said Clarke.
