WENGER: KICK OUT THE BAD DEBTORS

CONCERN: Platini

ARSENE WENGER has called for clubs who run at a deficit to be “kicked out of Europe”.

Arsenal boss Wenger supports a UEFA probe into football’s finances,  announced by president Michel Platini after the Champions League draw.

Platini is concerned at the high level of debt carried by some clubs, including English champions Manchester United and Chelsea, although the Blues are uniquely bankrolled by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Wenger, stressing he was talking generally and not specifically about United and Chelsea, said of UEFA’s inquiry: “It is very welcome. Teams who have a deficit should be kicked out of Europe.

“The only way to go is that there is a control over all of Europe, and I think it will go that way whether you like it or not. UEFA will bring in a control of management of every individual club.

“It is very important for the fans of the competition first, and it is very important that every club lives with the resources they have available.

“Clubs should not speculate and then after one year they cannot pay the salaries for the next seasons.

“Every transfer now in Europe is paid over two or three years, and it is compulsory that UEFA controls that the commitment of the club is right, because if that does not happen, it can all collapse very quickly.

“I do not speak about Chelsea or Manchester United. I speak in general. Football has to make sure the clubs are well managed. That is what it is all about.”

Arsenal have a long-term repayment commitment, of about £250million, after the move from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium two seasons ago.

Wenger added: “I think you have to balance your books, basically.  And for us to balance the books you have to be able to pay back every year what you are committed to.”
