IN THE DOG HOUSE: Puppies need a firm hand to avoid disasters

Saturday August 2,2008

Q Our new puppy has turned out to be a digger.

Every time we let him out into the garden he enthusiastically makes holes everywhere and he’s wrecking the place.

Do you have any suggestions for stopping him? We don’t want to fence off an area for him to play in unless there’s really no alternative, as we don’t have much room.

V Martin, Lincolnshire

A Hopefully he’ll grow out of it in time but meanwhile try long walks to tire him out before he’s let out in the garden, or feed him first so he feels too full to lark about.

One thing that sometimes works is to put in a sandpit and encourage him to dig there at the same time as putting netting, sticks or animal deterrent products around plants and places that are “off limits”.

You could also try taking him to training classes since a bit of obedience might help. The dog expert in charge may also have other suggestions.
