Pc Jacqueline Chaput said the 17-year-old refused to comply with repeated requests by officers to put down his knife and was shot with an electronic stun gun.

She said the victim allegedly broke into a car and stole items. He was followed by two citizens who flagged down police.

The teenager was taken in critical condition to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
