UK NEWSBENEFITS CHEAT REF NETTED £17,000 BY LYING ABOUT FITNESSThursday July 24,2008 By Tom MorganA FOOTBALL referee was paid more than £17,000 in disability benefit after claiming that he could not walk more than 100 yards. Any more than that caused him extreme tiredness and discomfort, he complained.
But every weekend Steven Paskin was running around as a local league referee, a court heard yesterday. [>
Benefits chiefs launched an undercover surveillance operation after a tip-off. They filmed Paskin, 46, in action on the pitch in his ref’s black strip. [>
Now it is Paskin who is set to be shown the red card as he faces jail for falsely claiming disability allowance. [>
[> Prosecutor Ian Williams said: “Paskin claimed he needed day care for his disability, but he managed to pass fitness tests for his local football association. [>
“Investigators managed secretly to film Paskin officiating at several football matches.” [>
He said it showed an “inconsistency” with his disability claim. [>
[> The investigation discovered that Paskin was a registered referee with Gwent County Football Association in South Wales. [>
Paskin, of Newport, yesterday admitted falsely claiming £17,375 disability living allowance between May 2003 and June 2007. [>
Caerphilly magistrates remanded him on bail until next month for sentencing at Newport Crown court. [>
Fraud investigator Kevin McGrath said after the hearing: “He told us he couldn’t walk further than 100 yards or for longer than 10 minutes without severe discomfort and extreme tiredness. Someone with that sort of disability would not have been able to referee a football match.” [>
Gwent County Football Association yesterday confirmed that Paskin had not registered as a referee for the coming season. [>
Paskin, who is married, is the third person in Wales to be netted in a Department for Work and Pensions inquiry targeting football referees. [>
Mr McGrath said: “We were given lists of certified referees and checked them against complaints we were investigating.” [>
“We are hoping this will serve as a warning to others.” [>
Earlier this year former Pembroke town mayor Keith McNiffe, 49, was given a four-month suspended sentence after saying he was too ill to work, despite refereeing 67 matches and passing an FA fitness test. [>
And Christopher Stockwell, 53, of Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, was ordered to do 150 hours’ community service after being filmed refereeing a football match, even though he claimed he needed crutches to walk. [>

For years successive governments have proposed various methods of dealing with benifit cheats. The most vocal opponents of any clamp-down have been - you've guessed, the truly disabled. If you are truly disabled then you have nothing to fear with having to prove it. Whilst this may cause you some inconvenience the bonus is that it will catch-out the con merchants, who are swindling billions - money that should be going to the genuinely disabled like yourself.

In Holy Scripture, the apostle states. "If you don't work neither shall you eat." Put them, along with miscreants to work as the land ladies worked, or is this' below them'
Allow these people to dig out flood prevention ditches, dig channels, call them canals. Canals that sucessive traitorous governments have allowed virtually to disapear. Allow them to restore expand rebuild rail network, a curse may well turn out to be a blessing, for Uk. and visitors. There are thousands of ways to advance and build some sort of cohesion in this beleaguered land, all to our mutual benefit, if not indeed our well being.

With the recent cuts to the civil service, it's amazing that there are any staff left to investigate benefit fraud. I wonder if the saving in wages off-sets the cost of benefit fraud and the cost of benefits for the people who lost their jobs in the last round of job cuts.
How many people have the backbone to inform on their neighbour for fear of being exposed as a grass? It's our taxes they are stealing and I think we all pay enough taxes as it is (except for the doley's).

I have dealing with these DLA forms, and find it amazing how many claimants, "cannot walk more than 50yds" or "need help and care 24 hours a day", when they apply for these benefits.
Where are the checks on the claimants before they start paying out!
The truly diasbled are being robbed by unscrupulous people who know what to exagerate on these forms to guarantee themselves payment.
Perhaps getting on this benefit has been made too easy, and the system too lax.
