KILLIE COOK UP SAMMON AFTER ROBBO TIP

Killie boss Jim Jefferies

By Scott Burns

KILMARNOCK boss Jim Jefferies has handed Conor Sammon the chance to win a contract - after he was given a glowing recommendation from John Robertson.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 striker, valued at £50,000, has arrived at Rugby Park on trial from Derry City.

Robertson signed the 21-year-old from UCD when he was in charge at the Brandywell and has told his former Hearts boss Jefferies that he is worth taking a gamble on.

Jefferies said: “I got a tip off about Conor from one of my contacts in Ireland and then I was told that John Robertson had taken him to Derry so I then gave John a call to find out a bit more about the lad.

“John gave him a glowing reference and said he was a big, strong striker with an eye for goal, who he believed could do well in Scotland.

“I think John paid something like £20,000 to sign him but believes he has a big future ahead of him.

“So, I made the call to Stephen Kenny and although he is reluctant to sell him he has to cut his playing squad and so has agreed to our request to let Conor come across on trial.

“I don’t know much about the lad so he will spent the next few days training with us and hopefully we can get him involved in a game before I make a decision on whether or not we will follow things up.”

The Killie boss is also in for Kilmarnock striker Steve Lovell but faces competition from English side Walsall and SPL rivals Falkirk.

Jefferies has admitted he is now in the market for two strikers after new signing Allan Russell picked up an injury during the pre-season.

“We have spoken to Steve Lovell and I think he is going to be speaking to another couple of clubs and hopefully we will get a decision by the end of the week, Jefferies admitted.

“We are hopeful but we have to wait and see what happens.

“We still have one or two other irons in the fire and one way or another I would want to bring in another couple of strikers.

“I wanted one before Allan got injured and now we are looking at the possibility of bringing in another one on top of that.”
