SMITH BIDS TO DEFUSE TERROR LAW ROW

Jacqui Smith is trying to defuse a row over tougher terror laws

Sunday April 13,2008

The Home Secretary made a fresh bid to defuse the row over tougher anti-terror laws, warning critics as many as 30 active plots against the UK were now being probed.

Jacqui Smith, who faces a serious Labour rebellion over plans to extend the time suspects can be held without charge to 42 days, said it was vital to "stay ahead".

She must calm intense anger within the party if the Government is not to suffer a repeat of the damaging 2005 defeat of proposals to extend the limit to 90 days.

Former cabinet minister Frank Dobson warned last week that opposition was stronger now because no evidence had been produced of a need to go beyond the present 28-day limit.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Sir Ken Macdonald is among a number of senior figures - including Security Minister Lord West of Spithead and ex-Attorney General Lord Goldsmith - to have voiced misgivings about the plan.

Writing in the News of the World, Ms Smith said: "We now face a threat level that is severe. It's not getting any less, it's actually growing."

She went on: "There are 2,000 individuals they are monitoring. There are 200 networks. There are 30 active plots. That has increased over the past two years. Since the beginning of 2007, 57 people have been convicted on terrorist plots.

"Nearly half of those pleaded guilty so this is not some figment of the imagination; it is a real risk and a real issue we need to respond to. We can't wait for an attack to succeed and then rush in new powers. We've got to stay ahead."

She went on: "When we extended the period from 14 to 28 days people said 'there's no need for this, it's not necessary. You'll never need to use it'.

"Well, we did. The number of international investigations are greater than before. Each time a plot is uncovered the terrorists learn and they develop. That is why there is a massive increase in the way they are using technology and encrypting evidence. It takes time to get the evidence you need to charge somebody."

LABOUR FAIL TO GRASP THE TERROR AND IMMIGRATION LINK

13.04.08, 5:17pm

A piece from Reuters about Islamic terrorist cells in the UK, replete with 30 active plots, has been posted today. This may be more government subterfuge - overstating the case to get their 42-day extension (from the current 28) to detain terrorist suspects, but either way New Labour Just keep digging themselves into ever deepening holes!

The Reuters report begins:-

“British police and security agencies are currently monitoring 30 terrorism plots, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said in extracts of a newspaper interview released on Saturday.

“We now face a threat level that is severe. It’s not getting any less, it’s actually growing,” she said in an interview to be published in Sunday’s Views of the Screws.

“We task the police and the security agencies with protecting us … There are 22,000 individuals they are monitoring. There are 200 networks. There are 30 active plots,” she said.

“Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Labour government is seeking to extend pre-charge detention of terrorism suspects to 42 days from the current 28-day limit.”

To state the obvious – had Labour and the Tories before them, not facilitated mass immigration in the first place, then we wouldn’t now be faced with such problems! And - instead of recognising the link between Islamic terrorism and immigration - and halting immigration from Islamic countries into our own - they, instead, bend over backwards to facilitate it!

I'D PULL MY HAIR OUT....

if i had any. The reason this govt has opened the floodgates to immigrants is to sow discord and paranoia amongst the indigenous population,(Divide and Conquer), in order to justify the implementation of these draconian measures. Democracy in this country is an illusion, it always has been.I quote,"There are no more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free".

EXTENDING THE PERIOD FROM 14 TO 28 DAYS

13.04.08, 11:02am

It should never have been necessary to even consider this.

This is Labour's desperate attempt to shut the stable door after the horse has bolted. If Labour had properly controlled immigration our country would have been a safer place today. Oh, and its not just Labour is it? Heath refused to listen to Enoch as well. They are all to blame for where we find ourselves today.

We are now breeding thousands of terrorists in our midst.

Prevention has always been better than a cure.

JACQUI SMITH,

13.04.08, 9:19am

Said it was vital to "stay ahead".

The only way to stay ahead is close our boarders, immediately deport all undesirables and illegal immigrants, WHY IS IT THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY COUNTRY THAT HAS A PROBLEM WITH GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE ROOTS OF THE MATTER?
FAR TOO MANY DO GOODERS IN OUR SOCIETY, BRINGING THIS COUNTRY TO ITS KNEES.
