Tungurahua's got one hell of a sore throat

Thursday January 10,2008

By Jack Teague for express.co.uk

ECUADOR'S TUNGURAHUA volcano looks like she's set for a monster eruption.

The volcano's name is appropriately translated as "throat of fire" in the Quichua language, which is spoken by a large number of South American Indians.

At least 1,000 people from 10 nearby villages have been forced to evacuate the surrounding area as Tungurahua  gets ready to blow.

They have been returning in the day to look after their animals and crops but staying in temporary shelters during the night to keep away from the danger area.

The 16,575-foot volcano has been active since 1999, and when it last erupted in 2006 at least four people were killed, along with hundreds of farm animals. Thousands of acres of crops were also buried under tonnes of lava.

It has been threatening to erupt since Dec 22, last year, and the Ecuadorian government have been urged to resettle evacuated families in areas away from any potential harm.
