ENGLISH LESSONS FOR IMMIGRANTS PLAN

Friday January 4,2008

Immigrants who have settled in Britain but cannot speak English will be targeted with language lessons under radical plans to improve community relations.

Skills Secretary John Denham said too many long-term residents lack the English skills they need to communicate with their neighbours.

The proposals would see free English classes aimed at those with a weak grasp of the language and groups who are least likely to integrate.

Economic migrants who plan to work in Britain for only a short time will have to pay fees for English courses.

Mr Denham said the ability to communicate was "the most important issue" for promoting integration.

He said: "There are still too many long-term residents committed to making a contribution to Britain who cannot engage with other people in their neighbourhoods - let alone play an active role in their communities - simply because their lack of English prevents it.

"This is having a negative impact on their life chances and limiting their ability to integrate. It is this group we wish to prioritise."

Funding for courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages (Esol) will be "more specifically targeted to foster community cohesion and integration in our communities".

The plan was published for consultation by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. The document said that the expansion of the European Union and the UK's traditionally tolerant attitude to immigrants had fuelled demand for Esol courses.

But the system could not provide free lessons for all would-be students, the plan said. Migrants who can afford to pay will be expected to meet the costs of up to 37.5% of their course fees. A typical Esol course costs around £900.

NO ENGLISH LESSONS FOR IMMIGRANTS.

04.01.08, 7:45pm

This is another stupid New Labour idea that will cost the tax payer £milions. The immigrants that have lived here for a number of years and not learnt the English language are either, too stupid, have no need to because they do not go outside of their settlement and that the government has given them all thats needed to survive or they have no desire to learn English as they do not want to intergrate with the indigeneous population.
Similarly, like Jaydee, I onced was stationed in Germany (BAOR) and by the time I left Germany I could speak German. Since the late 1970's, as a civilian, I have had to work within the German Vehicle Manufacturing Industry and my being able speak the language has a great asset.
I have also worked in the far east, Vietnam and learnt to speak Vietnamese to a good level, although not fluent. I also worked in Russia for three years and under went a very steep learning curve to be able to speak the language and I have been told by Russsian colleagues I speak Russian with a St Petersburger accent.
Over the years I never had any body pay for me to learn these Languages. I have learnt these languages so that I can work and survive every day life.
This idea of the Government will not achieve anything. The only cost effective way of getting immigrants to speak English is not to assist them by providing interpreters, claims forms in their native Language, etc. They will then have an incentive to learn the English Language to survive from day to day and prosper. Even better still, Make sure that genuine immigrants can speak English before arriving here or relatives of those that have settled here and are British citizens must have a working knowledge of the English language with a conditional commitment to improve English their language skills.
These non-English speaking immigrants are an economic drain on the country.

DO AS WE DO

04.01.08, 5:53pm

Make them go to night school and PAY as we have to if we wish to leard another language
They came here by their own free will to live in this country if they cannot be bothered to learn the language why come? They might just as well stayed where they were as you cannot get on in another country without speaking the language.
If its a case that they have contributed to this country, if it be finacially, they will be getting it all back in family allowances the way things are going

COURTESY OF BRITISH TAXPAYERS

04.01.08, 3:09pm

Tuition will be free for those on benefits and those migrants whose refusal to learn English is creating tension amongst native British folk.

Hang On! Labour say that migrants are contributing economically to this Country.

Perfect example of a negative economic effect immigrants are having on this country.

More waste of taxpayers money.

MANY A TRUE WORD

04.01.08, 2:01pm

Did you hear about the Asda employee who got sacked? A Muslim asked him if he knew of a good Port, Yes he said, Dover, now do one.
All good points on this subject, but with attitudes like these immigrants have, I feel they should be shown the exit to England and send the clown out with them.

STOP IMPORTING THE PROBLEM

04.01.08, 12:12pm

I agree with the other posters here, a far better solution would be to stop importing the people that cause the problem
