BRITONS 'PUT OFF WORK BY BENEFITS'

Wednesday January 2,2008

High rates of welfare benefits are making the British job market more attractive to foreign workers, an immigration watchdog has said.

Migrationwatch said there was little incentive for many unemployed benefit claimants to get a job because they would hardly be better off for working.

After analysing the benefits system, the group said a family with two children, for example, would get only £30 a week more working on the minimum wage rather than claiming benefits.

It claimed this was one of the reasons more than a million immigrants had come to work in Britain in the last 10 years, despite a pool of millions more Jobseekers Allowance claimants already in the UK.

Migrationwatch chairman Sir Andrew Green said: "We keep hearing that we need immigrants to do the jobs that the British won't do.

"It has been suspected for some time that benefit levels are a real disincentive to take work that is on offer and our research spells out why this may be so."

Sir Andrew said other factors to take into account included the flexibility of many immigrants who are looking for work.

But he added: "An important factor is that wages are now so close to benefits that there is very little financial incentive for unskilled British workers to find a job. By contrast, Poles have very strong financial motivation.

"On the minimum wage in Britain they are earning four to five times what they would earn at home and, by living in multi-occupancy, they can afford to send considerable sums of money back to their families - according to the National Bank of Poland, Polish migrants in the UK are sending home about £9 million a day."

Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain said unemployment benefit claimants had fallen since Labour came to power and insisted that immigration had assisted growth.

MIN WAGE

02.01.08, 11:14pm

£5.52 hr for the over 22yr olds 40 hr week = £220.80. then they get tax credits for all the kids they have back home and the rest they are having here using the NHS and dont forget the family allowance, they dont mind getting the min wage because they are getting a lot more here than at home. But what it is doing to the british worker is keeping the wages for us down and the bosses and government love it.

BRITONS 'PUT OFF WORK BY BENEFITS'

02.01.08, 8:53pm

High rates of welfare benefits are making the British job market more attractive to foreign workers, an immigration watchdog has said.

True BUT WASNT IT LABOUR WHO CAUSED ALL RHIS IN THE FIRST PLACE>

By the way - in Spain you often see groups of Illegal Immigrants living under Plastic sheets and cardboard boxes on waste land, or in derilict houses.

Somehow I dont think the Spanish are daft enough to make life cushy for such illegal immigrants.

CORRECTION

02.01.08, 4:55pm

'If they were to get a job, and that job paid only the minimum wage or not that much more than it' should be OR CONSIDERABLY MORE THAN IT. About £3 per hour more than the minimum wage, to make working whilst renting privately financially viable I should think.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING!

02.01.08, 12:31pm

Actually, there needs to be more council housing available to British people [which of course there isn't because immigrants have pushed in infront of Brits in housing queues en masse]. A council property costs about £50 per week LESS to rent than an equivalent property in the private sector. An unemployed person will have their rent paid by housing benefit. If they were to get a job, and that job paid only the minimum wage or not that much more than it, then they would have to pay their own rent & be WORSE off than on benefits. Where as if they lived in a council place & only had to pay that rent - then they would be BETTER off than on benefits!

SIMPLE SOLUTION

02.01.08, 12:04pm

Ban all white British people from receiving benefits. All welfare payments to go only to immigrants, illegal or otherwise.
Unemployment claiments down since Labour came to power. They are because of the way the Socialist's have juggled the figures. In actual fact the number of people OUT of work is at an all time high. The number of white British people
out of work is rising rapidly, because the eastern Europeans who are driving wages down will work for less. Employers Love Them
Well voters, you want more of the same you know what to do come election time.
To all you clowns who voted socialist tough, stop bleating
Immigrants have benefitted this country. Wrong they have benifitted places like Poland because most of the money they earn is sent back there.
Immigrants are sucking this country dry.

BRITONS BENEFITS

02.01.08, 11:19am

So all Peter Hain can say to counter the benefits v work contest is that unemployment claimants have fallen under labour. How on earth does he then explain the massive increase in the WELFARE benefits bill since labour came to power even though labour are always stating more people are in employment and there are more jobs than ever. NO Hain KNOWS that that the figures he keeps producing like a broken down record bear no resemblance to the true picture of the working age population, the problem is shifted from one set of figures to another to suit the govt. spin. If more people are in work, more jobs available, biggest ever tax collection and immigration is good for growth of the nation perhaps Hain would like to explain WHY the welfare benefits bill has increased by such a massive amount and the nations debt crises has happened since labour came to power.
