CALL FOR HIGHER ALCOHOL TAXES
Sir Liam Donaldson wants tax rises on alcohol imposed
Tax rises on alcohol should be imposed in order to reduce the damage caused to health, Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson suggested.
Sir Liam, who is the senior medical adviser to the Government, said he would "strongly commend" the use of tax as a deterrent to excessive drinking, as has been the case with tobacco.
Speaking in the wake of reports suggesting that violent offences and attendances at hospital accident and emergency units have risen following the introduction of round-the-clock drinking, Sir Liam also said he would welcome a review of 24-hour licensing.
And he said a ban should be considered on drinks companies sponsoring sporting activities and other events which link alcohol with fitness and glamour.
Sir Liam told the Daily Telegraph: "In our culture, getting drunk is seen as an exciting and status thing to do. We need to try and get away from that.
"I worry about the overall problem of alcohol misuse, the rising levels of cirrhosis. Tobacco is a good example of a public health problem that is in hand, but when we turn to obesity and alcohol misuse those are not yet anywhere near under control."
Sir Liam pointed out that the price of alcohol has fallen relative to the cost of living, making it more affordable to young people and children.
He stopped short of recommending a percentage increase in tax on a pint of beer, glass of wine or bottle of spirits.
But he said: "Like with tobacco, price works in reducing alcohol consumption. One of the target audiences is children - it's cheap for them to buy cider, for example - that would be an immediate effect."
Speaking about the relaxation of licensing hours introduced in November 2005, Sir Liam said: "Some of us worried about the decision when it was brought in and any review of the policy would be welcome." And he said that changes in the law on sponsorship by drinks companies would be "fruitful".
CALL FOR HIGHER TAXES SMOKESCREEN!!

What the halfwit Donaldson is doing is a publicity campaign to prepare the UK for the onset of more TAX.
The EU, which regretably, now rules this country have decreed that new taxes are the way forward, and what will these new taxes be spent on, NHS? Armed Services? Government Services? Nope it will go to the coffers of the EU.
What Mr Donaldson and his ilk should do, is what they are supposed to be trained to do, heal the sick, not pontificate about the perils of smoking, drink or obescity, those that do smoke, drink and eat, do it because we are free to do it. It has nothing to do with government nor the health inspectors, what we do to our bodies, as they are our bodies.
The rise of these puritanical halfwits, who do not enjoy life, have no real friends, are the bane of everyones right to do just as we please.
Because funnily enough the government have no madate to dictate what we can or cannot do with our bodies, so I raise my glass to Mr Donaldson and in olde anglo saxon wish him to getenski fukenskied!

TYPICAL!
21.07.07, 9:52am
A typical solution from a government that can’t see beyond its own nose, tax the majority to punish the minority!
More tax is NOT the answer!
With regard to alcohol related crime a simple solution should be – 1st alcohol related offence, slap on wrist. 2nd alcohol related offence, two weeks (14 days) in jail. 3rd alcohol related offence, another two weeks in jail. After three crimes the average worker will have used his/her holiday entitlement and a further incident will probably lose them their job and I don’t think that many people will risk losing their job…..
Lets face it a simple blood test will show an individuals blood/alcohol level so, to combat medical costs, the first two or three trips to a doctor/hospital for alcohol related medical attention should remain free but ‘repeat offenders’ should be charged IN FULL for any medical assistance they receive. If they can’t pay then simply send them on their way.

HIGHER TAXES ON ALCOHOL WILL MAKE ME FOR ONE TRY DRUGS WITH NO TAX
21.07.07, 1:45am
I would try drugs if my last pleasure a drink at night in my own home is hammered by TAX.
It would not stop binge drinkers and the young as they have to much money to waste.
If alcohol tax is meant for the NHS then it would be a waste of our money, look at the billions they got and wasted under BLiar, we now have overpaid doctors who can't even do their job, time to use robots instead of doctors.
As for the idea of opt out organ doners they should have a doners club for those who donate and only members can receive donated parts but the transplant should NOT be under NHS but private medical care. I have never seen where God made body parts designed to swap and share and would refuse the service for my body I would rather just be allowed to die in peace as God intended.

WHERE ARE THE PARENTS??
21.07.07, 12:49am
Why dont parents parent their children and the government get on with running the counry?
Why should I be taxd because parents are doing a rotten job and children are not taught the Three R's at home - Respect for self, Respect for other and Responsibility for actions. Anyone living by the Three R's couldn't possibly be a bing drinker as that would totally violate the Three R's

LABOUR'S BUREAUCRAT DOC, LIKE HIS EMPLOYER, TAX MAD
21.07.07, 12:17am
Here we go again, raise taxes that will put an end to binge drinking and out-and-out alcoholism. Anyone simpleton with an ounce of commonsense comprehends taxes seldom, if ever, ends anyone’s dependency on any drug, be it booze, tobacco or so forth. Frankly the like of Sir Donaldson are lacking in understanding of addiction… not to mention unimaginative in their banal effort to curtail health issues caused by, in this case, booze.
Why is it, these hollow-heads can only come up with “taxing” booze (or anything that is bad for one’s health) as “THE” solution and deterrent? As a senior medical advisor, Liam is a hackneyed and short-sighted medical-bureaucrat. Moreover, perhaps this is why he is this government’s Chief Medical Officer; their solution to anything and everything is “tax, tax, tax!”
