HI-TECH SPIES TRACK DOWN THE TERRORISTS

EVIDENCE: A forensic officer with a gas canister from Glasgow attack

Monday July 2,2007

By John Twomey and John Chapman

DETECTIVES used Big Brother surveillance technology to track down the terror suspects, it emerged last night.

They tapped into a nationwide spy system which tracks millions of car journeys daily and traced calls on two mobile phones in the desperate hunt for the bombers.

The key to the extraordinary detective work was the wealth of forensic and other evidence “gifted” by terrorists who failed to explode huge car bombs in central London early on Friday.

Two Mercedes cars, stuffed with petrol containers, gas cylinders and shrapnel, were parked in the West End – one outside the Tiger Tiger nightclub and a second in a side street a short distance away.

Both were made safe by explosives officers – leaving valuable clues to the terrorists’ identities.

While detectives viewed CCTV film from around the area, colleagues swiftly researched the “history” of the two vehicles.

It is understood one was hired and the other may have been stolen.

Using the police’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition system, officers were able to track the movements of the cars as they passed through networks of CCTV cameras on their way to their targets.

It is believed at least one was tracked from Scotland as it was driven south to London.

The ANPR database stores details of 35 million number plates recorded each day with the time of the identification and the location.

The system of cameras, sited on trunk roads and motorways, can follow a car’s movements over hundreds of miles and automatically alerts police if a car is stolen, if road tax has not been paid, if the MoT is out of date or if the driver is uninsured.

This would have allowed detectives to track two suspects as they travelled north on the M6 and then intercept their car.

The daring high-speed chase was carried out by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorist Command – supported by officers from West Midlands Terrorism Unit. Experts said some of the best clues to the terrorists’ identities would have come from mobile phones found in the two Mercedes.

Using mobile phone cell site analysis, detectives were able to pinpoint the precise area where calls were made or received.

A security source said: “If the bombs had gone off, the cars would have blown into a million pieces and the task facing the police would have been enormous. As it was, evidence, particular cell site analysis, could be processed very quickly with the possibility of making arrests very much enhanced.”

The two Mercedes also yielded up DNA samples, fingerprints, and documents. Strathclyde Police yesterday appealed to anyone with information about the green Jeep Cherokee used in the attack at Glasgow airport to contact them.

They particularly want to know where the vehicle – registration number L808 RDT – was kept over the past days and weeks.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said he was “absolutely confident” that his detectives would gain a thorough understanding of the terrorists’ methods, plans and networks. He said: “This investigation is extremely fast-moving. New information is coming to light hour by hour.”
Police said anyone with information should ring the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321.

DETECTIVES USED SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY

03.07.07, 9:06am

I have no problem with CCTV because I have nothing to hide. It just shows how valuable it is needed when it can be used to catch these Muslim extremists. All the arrests that have been made are all due to state of the art technology. I believe everybody that comes to the UK should have their photo taken, finger prints taken and their DNA. We need to keep this information to fight terror in our streets. If immigrant refuse then sent them home.

WELL DONE BIG BROTHER

02.07.07, 8:43pm

I could not ask for a better brother. You watch over me when I go out into the big bad world, You tirelessly monitor those who would harm me so that they can be apprehended and punished.
You can be sure I will defend your right to look after me against those criminals; rapists; paedophiles; murderers and misguided paranoid selfish "invading my privacy" types who would wish to curtail your good work.
