IS THE SMOKING BAN A WASTE OF TIME?

Is the ban a waste of time?

Sunday June 24,2007

PRISON officers last night warned of “chaos” in Britain’s jails over new rules that will ban them searching cells where prisoners have been smoking.

Ministers have excluded prison cells from the smoking ban that comes in to force a week from today. But they have said prison officers – and non-smoking prisoners  – must be protected from passive smoking.

Prison officers have now been told they should not enter a cell until the smell of smoke has gone. And prison governors have been warned they must provide non-smoking cells to all those who want them – increasing the accommodation pressure on jails already bursting at the seams.

Glyn Travis, assistant secretary of the Prison Officers’ Association, said the new rules could even compromise security.

He said: “The majority of cells have two or more prisoners and we already have to vet them for potential violence, racism and self-harm. Add smoking to that and sorting out accommodation is going to be like trying to plait soup.
“It is ludicrous – prisoners are going to be able to pick and choose their cells as if they were in a hotel. If they don’t like the cell they are in they will just say they’ve given up smoking.

“The other fundamental flaw is that we are going to have to give prisoners a 15-minute warning when we want to search a cell where someone is smoking to give time for the smoke to clear. That is a 15-minute window to destroy or hide the contraband we are looking for. Security will become a joke.

What do YOU think? Is the smoking ban a waste of time?

BAN SMOKING LAGS

09.08.07, 12:33pm

Simple stop smoking in the nick.
Give the criminals more reason to stop offending.
Thank god I`m old, soon be out of this mad house, pity you young folk.
Smoking kills it states on every packet, bring back hanging,it is quicker,so they get ill thru smoking then need treatment and compensation from the tax payers for allowing them to smoke.
Those that want to smoke should be set on fire.

SMOKING IN PRISON

01.07.07, 8:52pm

Cant believe prisoners can smoke in prison. They are being looked after by the tax payers money. If a landlord or pub owner gets put in prison for allowing smoking in their bar/restaurant - can they smoke in prison??? What do the prison officers do if they smoke?? Do they have to go outside or do they get special piveleges??? I think not. ARE THESE PEOPLE IN PRISON FOR A PUNISHMENT OR ARE THEY RULING US??? They are in prison at "Her Majestys pleasure" - does HM think they deserve a personal chef and a free bar as well??????????

PRISONS AND THE SMOKING BAN

27.06.07, 10:48pm

I believe that the correct decision has been made to allow prisoners who smoke to carry on smoking. Prison is their home for the time that they are in there and their punishment is to be locked up, away from society - not to be forced to quit smoking.
However, the rules regarding passive smokers are completely unrealistic and unworkable. Until someone comes up with a better idea regarding the health of passive smokers, things should remain the same as prior to July 1st. rather than to jump in with silly ideas that create more problems than they solve.
I'm sure that most of the non smoking officers would agree that the safety and security of any prison has to be the no.1 priority.

IS THE SMOKING BAN A WASTE OF TIME?

26.06.07, 12:18pm

No it isnt a waste of time and Ill tell you why.

The Smoking Ban followed by mass " across the board Fines " will inevitably antagonise Smokers to the extent that it will ultimately play a significant part in New Labours downfall at the next Elections.

Secondly like most other initiatives set up by New Labour it will no doubt end up being an absolute debacle .

TREVOR PHILLIPS

25.06.07, 9:28am

Is Trevor Phillips racist and a trouble rouser, I personally believe so. He insulted our much beloved late Queen Mother and has not been sacked. If he was white would he have been sacked or hounded out of office? I believe so.
Do not let this terrible slur insult go unpunished. SACK HIM.

IS THE SMOKING BAN A WASTE OF TIME?

24.06.07, 11:34pm

Smoking in prison well they do that to animals don’t they for test purposes, has no one noticed how this country has and still is being gradually run down and its people being demoralised, there is a reason. Think of it like this, we are all part of the same DOG, (reverse that and you get (GOD)having a head of authority with good people being the front legs straight, and bad people being the back legs BENT, so this leaves the question of who is the master?

Answers in an envelope please? Preferably to the government with all your ANGER!
