CHESS WITH LUKE MCSHANE

What kind of fool would you rather be - a greedy one or a reckless one?

Most of us have a particular attitude to sacrifices - some would rather accept them, and some would rather make them.

And since the possibility of losing always lurks beyond, how would you rather lose?

Would you rather be the mug who went grabbing pieces and lost a beautiful miniature, or the naive aggressor whose sacrifices came to nought?

Would you rather be a rook up, or a rook down?

We often think of the dangers in chess as purely about winning or losing, but the real choices are psychological - how would you prefer to be seen?

Sacrificing a rook is a special sort of risk. The game is unlikely to end in a draw, so it's glory or bust.  Sacrificing a knight or a bishop is a totally different proposition.

You pick  up a pawn or two in the process, another one drops off perhaps, and soon you have material compensation.  But a rook is a rook, which makes Shirov's play in this game particularly admirable.

BRIDGE WITH THE HACKETT FAMILY

Sunday July 20,2008

Story Image

EVERY year there is an invitation tournament in Bonn. Teams are offered two rooms and food and for the winners there are cash prizes.

The English team comprised David Gold, Gunnar Hallberg, Andrew McIntosh and Tom Townsend.

Paul was on the journalist’s team, partnering the editor of the International Bridge Press Association’s bulletin, Canadian John Caruthers.

Today’s hand comes from Bonn, where the winners were Germany with the Irish team of Rex Anderson, David Greenwood, Tom Hanlon and Adam Mesbur finished second.

The vulnerability prompted several West players to open 3NT.

This shows a solid minor in many pairs system. In theory it should be AKQJxxx or AKQxxxxx and some play it to deny an outside trick.

A popular variation is for it to sho...

BRIDGE WITH THE HACKETT FAMILY

Sunday July 13,2008

Story Image

IN THE European Championships in Pau it is fair to say that all nine of the home countries team’s were disappointed in their performance.

Two of the teams almost qualified to play in the world Championships.

The nearest were the English Senior team (Chris Dixon, Ross Harper, David Price, Victor Silverstone, Colin Simpson and Andrew Thompson).

They tied for the last spot with Italy, but as Italy beat them in the head-to-head match, it is Italy who go through and England become first reserve.

Early in the year when Iceland was playing their team’s trials we were commentating on some of the matches on BBO (Bridge Base On Line).

A hand that attracted our attention was this excellent defence from Isak Sigurosson and Steinar Jonsson.

Many will argue that it was poor judgement to remove 3NT to 4S, especially as 3NT will always make, but 4S became the contract in both rooms.

Story Image

PETER Leko emerged as the outright winner of this month's elite Dortmund tournament, taking first place with 4.5/7.

The Hungarian was extremely solid during the event, and quietly notched up victories against Vassily Ivanchuk and German grandmaster Jan Gustafsson (who himself shared the lead until his encounter with Leko in the sixth round).

Vladimir Kramnik had a horrible time of it. His loss to Naiditsch which I showed last week saw him caught out by better preparation, but he finished off with a gross blunder to Ivanchuk in the final round.

Van Wely is an inveterate risk taker, but got no joy in Dortmund and scored just 1/7.

In the last round when things were looking good against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, in this position Black found a counterattack out of the blue.
