DUB COLOSSUS: A TOWN CALLED ADDIS (REAL WORLD) ***

Story Image

Friday August 22,2008

By Claudia Goulder

The pop explosion enjoyed by Ethiopia in the Sixties before a hardline Marxist Government seized power is reflected in this fun, colourful EP. Produced in a makeshift studio in downtown Addis Ababa, the result is an ambitious mishmash of sounds and styles which sometimes work, sometimes don’t. The dreamy blues vibe of Shegye Shegitu is haunting and impressive, but the more generic Azmari Dub with its Seventies reggae beats and brash, funky brass and driven bass is just ‘world music’ at its most average.
