A Grevy's zebra foal and its Mother

Wednesday July 23,2008

By Penny Stretton for Express.co.uk

Like Mother like child – This rare Grevy’s Zebra foal takes its first walk around its home and Mum and baby make a striking pair.

Three of these beautiful Grevy’s Zebra’s have been born at Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire.

The elegant animals are usually found in the wild in Kenya and Ethiopia – but numbers of the species have declined in recent years.

All of the zebra foals – two colts and one filly- as well as their Mothers are doing well and can now be seen out and about in the park reserves.

The lanky Grevy’s Zebra is the largest of all the wild horses and has narrower stripes than other Zebra’s and distinctive tall, round ears.

Their fine stripes help them stick together in herds and be less vulnerable to predators because the lines blur making it much harder to pick out an individual Zebra.

The unusually named Grevy’s Zebra takes its title from the French President Jules Grevy who was presented with one the Zebra’s in the 1880’s by the government of Abyssinia.

Grevy’s Zebra’s mate all year round and only single foals are born.
