Diana's boys

This "boys" thing is driving me nuts. Can't we say "sons" or "Princes William and Harry" or if that's too long, "the Princes". This "boys" thing was part of the over-familiar, cloying, sentimental vocabulary surrounding Diana's death. Is it really necessary more?
