A ROCK FESTIVAL IS NO PLACE FOR CHILDREN

Tuesday July 8,2008

A rock festival is no place for children

A crowded, alcohol-fuelled festival is no place for a baby

I SPENT last weekend launching headfirst into embarrassing dad territory by attending the Roskilde music festival in Denmark, basically the Scandinavian equivalent of Glastonbury.

It was great to quaff beer in the warm sun, check out some cool bands and pretend that I am still down with the kids.

However, I was flummoxed by the sight of children about my son’s age – just 16 months – who were being dragged around the festival site by their parents.

Who on earth would take a baby to a massive rock music festival? There is nothing positive a small child could possibly get out of it.

Some festivals, such as the Big Chill, accommodate children but most, such as Roskilde and Glastonbury, do not. Still, that doesn’t stop some parents from taking their kids along for “the experience”.

The poor kids I saw at Roskilde were caked in dust and baking in the hot sun as they were subjected to deafening music and increasingly squalid conditions. (Anyone who has ever been to a large music festival knows that any bush, wall, bin or tree will be used as a makeshift toilet eventually.)

Scenes witnessed by friends at last year’s mud-splattered Glastonbury included toddlers in tears as they were being hurried along through giant puddles by selfish parents desperate to see the next big act perform.

It is at best naïve and at worse cruel to imagine that anyone under the age of about 10 will enjoy themselves at such an event.

That’s why Mummy and I took turns babysitting (we were staying with friends who live nearby the festival site, not tenting it at the disgusting campsite – I’m way too old for that). One of us would be out having fun at the festival while the other would be having fun with Golden Boy.

Sure, it meant that we both saw less of the festival than we would have liked. But sometimes sacrifice is what being a parent is all about.

COLLECTION OF FLOWERS

16.08.2008, 10:29pm

The right rose
appears in my mind,
and everywhere
shines when the
soft wind remains
in the light of
a flower; the cold
leaf is dead
and here there's
a shadow, the
delicate dark and
a loving profile.

FACING THE SEA...

19.07.2008, 10:17pm

A delicate and
soft wind is
blowing near an
empty space,
while the curtain
covers a silky
notepaper describing
a picture and the
love for the youth;
I call you my
darkness, I wait
for a dream......

FOR THE KIDS

15.07.2008, 7:29am

There are loads of festivals in Denmark especially organised with kids in mind. Check out the "WIld Volcano Fesitval", which is the biggest http://vildevulkanerfestival.dk/

Roskilde isn't for children and they have no facilities for them. So don't take them!

A ROCK FESTIVAL IS NO PLACE FOR CHILDREN.

Agreed, I hastily add public houses to rock festivals. Powers that be, have no conception, perception, not even a logical approach appraisal, to the reasoning in my statement, they, parliamentarians, along with experts totally unable to draw a natural, logical, 'honest' conclusion to many matters !.
If being wrong in my appraisal/ conclusion of my statement, what of binge drinking ? all the other facets of problems that parliamentarians are unable to come to grips with, or find an answer to, with all the experts at hand. Being in a licenced premises alone is not the only social aspect / consideration, in this matter !
Parliamentarians, experts, quangos, are but puffs of smoke in a smoke screen !

I AGREE BUT...

09.07.2008, 1:32pm

I was at Glastonbury this year and there was a three acre kids field that looked like a lot of fun! Puppet shows, face painting, kids theatre, workshops and a creche of sorts.

But yes - if parents are going to be selfish and drag their poor kids around to see what they want to see, then you can understand the tantrums!
